5 Herbal Teas for Hydration header image

Nothing is more important in the Aussie summers than hydration. If you’re looking to maximise your hydration this summer without reaching for sugary sports drinks, then why not consider our herbal spring and summer teas? Let’s take a look!

Ingredients to Look Out For When Considering Hydration

When trying to choose a summer herbal tea specifically for hydration it’s crucial to consider the ingredients you’ll be consuming. Herbal teas which are caffeine free should be number one on your list.

Large amounts of caffeine can cause electrolyte imbalances and can act as a diuretic causing you to pass more urine and therefore loose more water.

Ginger is another ingredient to look for or anything which helps to boost digestion as proper digestion is absolutely key to remaining hydrated in the summer. Of course, anything high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are also great herbal teas to choose to boost your overall health over the hotter months.

Herbal Teas vs Other Beverages

When you’re feeling hot and sticky it can be really tempting to reach for an isotonic sports drink. However, many groups such as pregnant or breastfeeding women cannot consume these beverages and they often come with a lot of excess baggage you may not want to consume!

Herbal teas are a clean, natural way to promote hydration without added sugars, colourings or preservatives. Furthermore, some isotonic beverages can be dangerous when consumed regularly whereas many herbal teas actually bring you plenty of amazing benefits when drank daily!

How to Brew Large Batches of Herbal Tea

Any true Australian will know the easiest way to remain hydrated is to have something cool and delicious brewed up in bulk to keep you going throughout the day. Preparing your beverage of choice before you’re thirsty and sipping slowly throughout the day is the ultimate way to boost hydration!

Here's a simple method to brew a big batch that keeps its flavour and aroma intact:

Ingredients:

●    8-10 tablespoons of your preferred loose-leaf herbal tea or 10-12 tea bags

●    2-3 litres of filtered water

●    Sweeteners (optional: honey, agave syrup, or sugar)

●    Fresh herbs or fruits (optional: mint, lemon, berries)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, bring your water to a boil. Herbal teas generally don't get bitter with extended steeping, so the water should be piping hot.
  2. Once the water reaches a boil, remove it from the heat. Add your loose-leaf herbal tea directly into the pot, or use a tea infuser for easier straining. If you're using tea bags, simply drop them in.
  3. Allow the tea to steep for at least 10 minutes. You can steep herbal teas for longer to intensify the flavour—up to 20 minutes, depending on how strong you want it.
  4. While the tea is still hot, add your sweetener of choice if desired. Stir until dissolved.
  5. Remove the tea bags or strain out the loose leaves. Let the tea cool to room temperature before transferring it to the refrigerator.
  6. Refrigerate the tea for at least 2 hours or until it's completely chilled.
  7. When ready to serve, pour over ice and garnish with fresh herbs, slices of citrus fruit, or berries for a refreshing twist.

1. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is one of those perfect summer herbal teas to keep on hand all year round. It’s got fabulous immunity-boosting properties, helps keep the mood mellow, improves sleep and is caffeine-free.

Not only that, but chamomile tea also comes with the added bonus of improving digestion, which is why it’s included in our hydration helper list of herbal teas! Add a dash of lemon and honey for a refreshing variety of iced chamomile tea, perfect for sipping on all summer long.

2. Lemon Fusion Black Tea

Now, we love our Lemon Fusion Black tea as an herbal tea that is ideal for staying hydrated because it tastes so perfect for summer. A chilled pitcher of lemon tea is absolutely ideal if you need something delicious to motivate you to drink enough.

Add some ice cubes made from the tea itself, sit back and feel like you’re sitting in the shade of a lemon tree enjoying a gentle breeze and not sending emails in an air-conditioned office!

3. Spearmint Tea

Personally, I adore mint teas all year round, but this Spearmint tea is a real favourite for me over the summer! Our blend of spearmint tea is best loved for its digestion-aiding properties, but for me, it’s more of an intense love affair with the refreshing taste of this tea!

I have known people to add a dash of vanilla to this tea for an almost candy cane-like flavour, but that just seems totally wrong to me in the summer! I prepare fresh raspberries for a fruity partner to balance the mint!

4. Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea manages to sneak its way onto pretty much every favourites list because it is delicious, healthy and refreshing all year round! However, hibiscus has made its way onto this particular list because it aids digestion and tastes wonderful making it incredibly drinkable in the summer months.

If you’re trying to squeeze into that new swimsuit then hibiscus is also a safe way to gradually lose weight since it gently boosts your metabolism.

5. Ginger Tea

Ginger tea is marvelous for summer since it boosts circulation and can help cool you down. It also promotes digestion and can help with an upset tummy which is perfect for those days when it is just too hot!

Flavour pairings can be anything from a simple spoon of honey to a squeeze of citrus fruits to make this herbal tea truly irresistible!
