Stress and anxiety - of all the effects herbal tea can have on the body and mind, this is perhaps my favourite. Why? Simply because it can be such an effective and cheap alternative to modern medicine.
Having some personal experience with stress and anxiety myself, I've been quite looking forward to writing this post. If the information contained within helps even one person find something that works for them and gives a little bit more peace in day to day life then my job is done!
Tea is often perceived as a beverage to be drinking when winding down and relaxing. This is not really technically always the case, as some contain caffeine. So when it comes to stress and anxiety reduction, some tea are most definitely better than others.
Remember - everyone is different and what works for one person may not work for another. I would urge you to take the time to try one different type every few days or so and work out which tea has the greatest impact.
Let's start to explore the most effective herbal teas at combating stress and anxiety.
Here we go!
Valerian Tea
Valerian root tea. Once upon a time I was afflicted with a fairly moderate amount of anxiety and stress daily. During that time I sought answers and relief - of which I can say one of the more effective remedies was Valerian root tea.
It takes awhile to get used to the unusual taste, but once I did get used to it I started to enjoy it. The effect is more mental, and didn't notice any effects on my body. No drowsiness, sleepiness. The only effect I did notice was an enhanced sense of relaxation. There are probably better options of tea to be taking right before bedtime as it doesn't make you drowsy so I'd recommend drinking this tea during the day and then having a tea for sleeping about 15-30 mins before bedtime.
Passionflower Tea
Passionflower tea is good for anxiety, but also has the added effect of making it easier to get to sleep. If I were to give a rating for both teas, I would give Valerian tea a 9/10 for anxiety/stress relief and a 3/10 for a sleeping aid. I would give Passionflower 6/10 for stress and anxiety and then 8/10 for sleeping aid.
This should give you some idea as to the strengths and weakness between the two.
This herb is sometimes recommended by therapists for those suffering from generalized anxiety disorder, because it's a good allrounder tea for sleep, stress, and anxiety that's also easy to stomach for those not used to the variety of tastes that different herbal teas have to offer.
Damiana Tea
Damiana yet again has different strengths and weakness to the above two. With quite an earthy taste, some people that didn't have much success with Passionflower or Valerian - found their answer within Damiana. Interestingly this tea can also enhance libido, which is one of the things normally affected by stress and anxiety. If your libidos decline is the result of stress and anxiety, then I would urge giving this one a go. A great tea for balancing the hormones and emotions - with many reporting an uplifting feeling for hours after consuming.

Hi Toby,
You don’t have to print/publish that last email I sent. I just gave you a nice sleep tea recipe you can use if you like. Cilla (aka Priscilla)

Melissa (lemon Balm), passionflower and scullcap are mixed together for a great sleep enhancing tea. I find valerian a bit ‘heavy’ and it doesn’t suit me, as it affects me too much.
You can use my recipe if you like – no copyright on that!
