Two of My Favourite Rooibos Tea Cocktails

If you’re struggling to find flavourful cocktails to wow your guests then why not reach for Rooibos?

Often overlooked as a fun cocktail ingredient, herbal tea is not to be sniffed at as a cheap and healthy alternative to other mixers.

Rooibos tea offers a delightful twist to traditional cocktails. In this blog post, we will explore the art of upping your mixology game by using Rooibos tea to wow your guests at every dinner party!

Why Choose Rooibos Tea

The wonderfully sweet and nutty flavour of Rooibos tea is what makes it such an ideal ingredient to add to cocktails or mocktails!

Rooibos Red and Rooibos green each have slightly different undertones within their flavour profiles, meaning you can change the entire personality of a beverage simply by switching out the tea.

Let’s start mixing up a storm with two of my favourite Rooibos cocktails ever!

Rooibos Mojito

This quick and simple Rooibos Mojito is a fresh opener to knock the socks off dinner party friends or liven up a BBQ!

Ingredients:

  • Two lime wedges
  • 2 ounces white rum
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 4 ounces brewed Rooibos Red tea, cooled
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • Ice cubes
  • Soda water
  • Mint sprig, for garnish
  • Lime wheel, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Grab a cocktail shaker or a sturdy glass and add the fresh mint leaves and lime wedges. Next use a muddler or the back of a spoon to muddle them together gently. This releases the mint's aroma and extracts the lime's juices without damaging their structure and creating a mess in your glass!
  2. Then, you can carefully pour the white rum even the cheap brands will do and simple syrup into the shaker.
  3. Now it’s time to add the cooled brewed Rooibos Red tea. Slowly fill the shaker with ice cubes making sure all the ingredients are covered by ice.
  4. Make sure the lid of the shaker is totally attached to the body and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. Think of Tom Cruise in Cocktail and really put some effort into it!
  5. Now it’s time to fill a highball glass or a Collins glass with ice cubes. You can sugar the rim of the glass if you want to but I often don’t bother to avoid the added sugars.
  6. Carefully strain the cocktail mixture into the prepared glass, stopping when the glass is roughly three-quarters full. Top it off with a splash of soda water for some bubbles.
  7. Add the finishing touches with a sprig of fresh mint and a cheeky wedge of lime resting on the side of the glass.

Rooibos Berry Spritzer

Popular with the ladies, this Rooibos Berry Spritzer is fun to whip out halfway through the night to make a change from boring beers or spiked seltzers.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 8 ounces sparkling water
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces brewed Rooibos Green tea, cooled
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint leaves, for garnish
  • Lemon slices, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Chuck your mixed berries into a blender and give them a good whizz until they become puree.
  2. Next in a tall glass, combine the sparkling water, vodka, brewed Rooibos Green tea, and lemon juice. Give it a little stir with a long bar spoon just to combine the flavours.
  3. Add the crushed berry puree to the glass and give it another little mix.
  4. Fill the glass with ice cubes (feel free to use fun-shaped ones!) and allow it to chill.
  5. Slowly pour the cocktail into your tall glass feel free to do this from a height if you’re confident it’ll be an impressive moment of showmanship and not a disaster (speaking from experience here)!
  6. Garnish with some fresh mint leaves and a little slice of lemon to look really professional!
